Current Events Forum Midcoast Senior College announces a new program, in partnership with the Curtis Memorial Library, entitled “Current Events Forum.”
Commencing March 7, 2012, and running through the month of May, meetings occur weekly each Wednesday from 12 Noon - 1 p.m. in the Morrell Meeting Room of the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick.
At each session, topics of local, national, and international concern will be introduced by a moderator. Attendees will be given an opportunity briefly to express their points of view.
These meetings are free and are open to the public.
During the past month, moderators have brought thoughtful and challenging questions for the audience to consider, here are a few:
- The US today reserves the right to target enemies world wide, how do you view the legitimacy of premature strikes?
- Is unlimited medical care a right for all or is it a privilege available only to those who can afford it?
- Should US policy aim to increase the gap between rich and poor, narrow the gap, keep it the same, or ignore the entire issue?
- If the Syrian government backs down from its commitment to peace, what should be done next?
People of diverse opinions are welcome and all attendees are given an opportunity to express their view. The only rules are to share the floor and listen respectfully.
