MSC Digital Library courses are popular courses that were recorded a previous term. Digital Library courses consist of:

  • Pre-recorded class videos available to watch at your convenience from Sept. 13 through Nov 5.
  • Two livestream conversations with faculty using Zoom
  • All videos, links and course materials are posted on-line

Course: Plato’s Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito provide an excellent introduction to philosophy. These dialogues are so accessible that they require no prior study of philosophy, yet they are so rich that even the most serious scholars have critically discussed them for more than two millennia. Our discussions will devote time to both the dialogues and some of the historical criticisms of them. In addition to providing the opportunity for interested individuals to learn about the philosophical activity, our discussions will show students how to engage in it.

Text: Plato, Five Dialogues: Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, and Phaedo (Second Edition) trans. G.M.A. Grube, revised by John M. Cooper (Indianapolis: Hackett Publishing, 2002). ISBN: 9780872206335. Bruce Hauptli earned a B.A. in mathematics from Lawrence University and an M.A. and Ph.D.in philosophy from Washington University. He is an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Florida International University in Miami, where he taught for thirty-nine years and used these dialogues in a historically-themed introductory philosophy course for undergraduates. He has taught this course and four others at MSC.
