Tenth Anniversary Celebration

Saturday November 21, 2010 Midcoast Senior College held its 10th year celebration at the Bath Middle School with 185 guests present.  This event was held to celebrate a decade of service to seniors of theMidcoast community who have enjoyed a combination of intellectual stimulation and socialization.  The celebration included morning workshops, luncheon, followed by guest Tim Sample who brought the house down with his wonderful Maine humor.

Board members Dorothy Bell and Mark Smith congratulate Nancy Wheeler and Jack Thompson for their contributions to Midcoast Senior College

Special tribute on this occasion was paid to founders Nancy Wheeler and Jack Thompson for their dream realized of starting a Senior College in the Bath-Brunswick area over ten years ago.  Nancy and Jack wrote a letter to the public back in 1999 inviting them to come and explore the idea for a senior college in this area.  An open house was held and initial planning began.  The following spring, March 2000, the college opened with 6 courses hosted by the University College at Bath/Brunswick.  Today, Senior College offers 18-20 non-credit courses each semester, a Winter and Summer Wisdom Lectures Series, and summer excursions to cultural events and historical sites in the region.  For many years, the college existed under a charter from the University of Maine System and received assistance from the staff of University College at Bath/Brunswick.   In 2012, MSC will become an independent, not-for-profit educational organization.

A Board of fifteen volunteerDirectors administers our no-exam, no grade, and no-credit program. We welcome students 55 years of age and above regardless of educational background, race, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.
