Print Friendly, PDF & Email

9:30-11:00 a.m.  4-week, 90-minute course begins Tuesday 1/18

The short story has always been a staple of French literature. In this course we will look at some of the classic French stories from the 19th to 21st centuries by authors such as Maupassant, Flaubert, Balzac, Yourcenar, Camus, Sartre, and others. Each week’s stories will revolve around a theme: art, love, the fantastic, and existentialism. Readings and discussion in English. Required readings: PDF versions of the stories will be made available on line. Bill VanderWolk taught French literature for forty years, principally at Bowdoin College. The French short story was a part of virtually all his courses.
