Epic Poetry

 12:30-2:30 p.m. 8-week course begins 3/13

What is the epic and why is it worth reading today? To find out, three famous epics will be read in translation: Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and The Chanson de Roland. We will discuss the nature of epic poetry, explore the cultures from which it evolved, and listen to selections in original languages. Short sections of the more familiar Odyssey, Iliad, and Aeneid will be studied closely for balance and understanding, and to put a modern face on the form, we will talk together about modern epics. Required Books: Epic of Gilgamesh, Andrew George, trans., ISBN 978-0140449198, Daniel Donoghue, ed., Beowulf,  Seamus Heaney, trans., ISBN 978-0393975802, and The Song of Roland, Dorothy Sayers, trans., ISBN 978-0140440755.
