Introduction to Japanese Culture

This is an introductory course on Japanese culture. Various topics of Japanese culture will be introduced, including basic facts about geography, history, religion, social and family life, aesthetics, performing arts, and political system. A comparative approach of views on beliefs, values, and traditions of both the U.S. and Japan is encouraged. Students will also learn a few basic expressions in Japanese. MSC

Reiko Yonogi is a native of Tokyo, Japan. Her undergraduate degree is in English and American literature from Japan. She has a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Comparative literature from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She taught Japanese language, culture and literature at the University of Georgia, Athens, and Indiana University at Indianapolis, retiring in 2014.
