This course is for those who have always wanted to read War and Peace but perhaps never got beyond page 40. Tolstoy’s masterpiece, with characters and scenes as real today as they were 200 years ago, stands at or near the top of many lists of the greatest prose works in world literature. We will read and discuss the book gradually, assisted by excerpts from the legendary 1969 Russian Olm version. Any translation may be used, but references in class will be to Pevear and Volokhonsky’s version. MSC
