The mission of the MSCN is to “provide a curriculum of intellectually stimulating learning opportunities and special activities for persons 50 years of age or older.” This mission statement was created when the first Senior College classes were established in 1997 on the Portland campus of the University of Southern Maine. Today Maine has 17 Senior Colleges reaching from Fort Kent to Wells and from Bethel to Machias. Maine is the only state in the country with a Senior College Network, and current estimates show an active membership of approximately 7,000 members.
