Making the Connections: Africa, Slave Trading, The Americas

This course will explore the historical context of how and when enslaved persons were brought to the Americas and examine the motivations of New England slave traders and Europeans in the Caribbean. It will also look at the domestic slave trade following the official end of the Atlantic slave trade in 1808. Ultimately, the course will help us think about the development of racism in our country.

From 1990-1997 Susan Bowditch lived in Cape Coast, Ghana, West Africa. Cape Coast Castle and its dungeon were visible from her house and a constant reminder of the slave trade. Susan has taught about African-American history, racism, and white privilege since 2014. The Highlands.
