Monhegan and Beyond: The Art of James Fitzgerald

This course will cover the life and selected works of James Fitzgerald, whose professional career began in California, but who spent his mature years in Maine and travelled widely to Ireland, England, and Spain. We will look at the broad influences, both visual and cultural, on his work, and how his art fits into the development of American art over the course of the mid-20th century. Susan Danly is an independent curator of American art with over 30 years of experience in museums across the country. Most recently she has focused on the history of Maine art and is currently a trustee of the Monhegan Museum of Art and History and consulting curator for an exhibition of Fitzgerald’s work now on view at the Monterey Museum in California.
