12:30-2:30 p.m. 8-week course begins 3/10

Is morality something we are born with or do we learn it through our families and culture? What happens when you find yourself talking with someone who appears to have a different understanding of right and wrong? This class will review theories of moral development including some of the recent literature that includes the role of emotions. Class members will have an opportunity to identify which moral foundations influence their behavior. By using readings and role-playing, class members will be asked to look at moral and ethical dilemmas from a new perspective. Required Books: Joshua Greene, Moral Tribes, ISBN 978-0143126058 and Jonathan Haidt, The Righteous Mind, ISBN 978-0307455772.

Susan Mikesell is a retired psychologist who enjoys the exchange with students on topics that are relevant to our age and time. She has previously taught courses on The Mature Mind and Being Mortal at MSC. MSC
