Lost and Found in the Deep Blue Sea II

Building on the success of the 2023 “Lost & Found in the Deep Blue Sea” series, this second installment of “Lost and Found” will take participants on new underwater adventures and explore compelling mysteries beneath the waves. As with the original series, each lecture will blend historical and current events, focusing on the mysteries of lost ships, aircraft, and other underwater discoveries, as well as topics related to diving and submersible technology. Each presentation will incorporate elements of history, archaeology, science, and technology, creating an engaging experience designed for audiences of all backgrounds. Featured topics will include updates on three recent search efforts: the hunt for Amelia Earhart’s aircraft, recent efforts to locate Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, and the recently completed The Explorers Club expedition searching for a Civil War submarine. Additional topics will be shaped by participant interest and may include mapping seafloor environments and underwater objects using photogrammetry, the emerging role of AI in oceanographic data processing, and “Demons of the Deep”—an exploration of submerged hazardous waste in Massachusetts Bay, lost nuclear submarines, and Maine’s ghost fishing gear.

None required, as we will tackle each lecture with no prior knowledge required. However, should participants want to delve deeper, additional reading will be suggested or articles provided, depending on the subject matter and interest of the class.

Vince Capone has participated in nine Explorers Club Flag expeditions regarding historic shipwrecks, found lost shipwrecks, and submerged hazardous waste containers. He has 35 years of marine technology and training experience.
