A Friday afternoon at Merrymeeting Fields: the weather was breezy and sunny, a good time for a hike at this wonderful site. (I try to go on these hikes about the same time every visit.) After picking up a trail map at the parking area, I made my way through upper and lower fields to the scenic overlook on the eastern shore of Merrymeeting Bay. If any of you get to the overlook, be sure to watch your step. When I took the photo below, I was standing less than a foot from the water’s edge.

While at the overlook I noticed the large iron ring used by David Trott to tie up boats back in the 19th century. There were acorns all over the place – must be another “mast” year. The open fields were full of plants wild with fall color. Did anyone notice the pesticide warning posted along the Trott Loop Trail? A “cut stump” application by Eco Conservation Services, according to my field notes. No date given, and I checked the EPA number on the pesticide warning. Guess what? Roundup Weed-Grass Killer Super Concentrate.

Those pesticide signs were everywhere. Even cut stump application is bound to leach into the bay!

I didn’t have the nerve to go down that slope to the water. My daughter did and said it was quite slippery. There was also a spot with a nice footbridge but with a cut log maybe2” thick at the end of it,carefully placed across it. There are stepping stones beneath it and I was afraid it would roll with me on it. I poked it with my stick and sure enough it did.

i must say, speaking as an old lady, it would have been nice to have a few stumps or logs sticking out where I could have rested, I mean other than the stone wall which was much appreciated.

i wonder what that old foundation was for. The Fields house?
