President’s Report: President Doug Bates thanked the MSC singers and called the meeting to order a 1:02 p.m. He expressed thanks to Bowdoin College and to Janet Kehl and her Committee for planning the event. He also referenced the banner to his right listing our sponsors and thanked them individually. He also thanked Executive Director, Donna Marshall, and MSC’s members and many volunteers.

Secretary’s Report: Secretary Lynn Lockwood asked for corrections or additions to the 2018 annual meeting minutes. Hearing none, the minutes were approved by the assembly. (Cichocki/Williams)

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Erv Snyder observed that the minutes of last year’s meeting reflected optimism, as we moved to our new home at Brunswick Landing. He noted that, although at the time of the meeting there were still many uncertainties, the exemplary leadership of MSC President Jim Wilkes made that optimism a reality and brought us to a place where, despite many increases in cost, we are ending the fiscal year in the black. This, he said, is despite the expenses involved in outfitting new classrooms with furnishings and technology, and providing well-deserved compensation increases to our Executive Director and Bookkeeper. Mr. Snyder added that Mr. Wilkes also spearheaded efforts which improved communication with MSC membership and also resulted in the addition of new course offerings. Mr. Snyder concluded by saying that MSC is moving forward with high expectations for continued success and growth thanks to the deeply appreciated support of its members.

Board Acknowledgements and Vote: President Bates thanked Board members for their diligent work during the past year. He announced the departure of three outgoing Board members; Tony Belmont, Ron Golz and Linton Studdiford. Two other members, Lynn Lockwood and Bob Williams, will be serving their second three-year term. Mr. Bates also announced that the MSC Nominating Committee has proposed three new members to the Board: Susan Michael, Bill Haggett, and Kelly Matzen. The candidates were approved by membership. (Annee Tara/Devito)

Summer Excursion Announcement: Events Committee Chair Jane Kehl announced plans for the MSC summer excursion, a chartered three-hour lighthouse cruise with Maine Maritime Museum.

Raffle: Susan Michael drew winning raffle tickets

Faculty Recognition and Bill Brown Award: Victor Papacosma, Co-chair of the Curriculum Committee, recognized the faculty as the engine of MSC. He also observed that it’s been a year of transition due to the implementation of membership requests such as the new Winter Term and other innovations. He said that there are six new faculty members and will be 26 courses for the Fall term. Linton Studdiford, Co-chair of the Curriculum Committee awarded the second annual Bill Brown Award for Teaching Excellence to Ann Kimmage. Her name will be engraved on a plaque which hangs at MSC.

Wheeler-Thompson Founders Award: President Bates announced that the Wheeler- Thompson award is being given to Richard DeVito who he described as a mainstay of MSC administration and technology for many years.

Wilkes and Others tribute: President Bates read a resolution adopted by the Midcoast Senior College Board of Directors in honor of Jim Wilkes. He then introduced Stu Gillespie who performed a song he composed as tribute to Mr. Wilkes and others who were close to MSC.

Adjourn: President Bates adjourned the meeting at 1:41 p.m.

TREASURER’S REPORT ’22/’23 FISCAL YEAR

TREASURER’S REPORT
MIDCOAST SENIOR COLLEGE
END OF 2022-2023 FISCAL YEAR

The MSC 2022/2023 fiscal year as the covid restrictions have been eased and eliminated has been a time of transition for our programs and activities. Classes early in the year which were all conducted via Zoom have now evolved from some Zoom and some in-person to most in-person for our final series of courses. Sites for in-person classes have all been located and assigned for the 2023/2024 fall classes. Membership and enrollment trends from the later part of the closing year have been positive but not overwhelming.

The budget for 2022/23 which was approved in May of 2022 called for total income of $137,940. As of the end of April 2023, the figures* indicate that MSC will fall approximately $20,000 short of that goal. Expected expenses for that fiscal year were projected in the budget to be $131,764. Again, by the end of April the amount was $106,860 and a final estimate would be in the $120,000 range or about $12,000 below the original estimate. Given those numbers the fiscal year will end about $4,000 behind rather than the $6,176 surplus which was projected in that budget.

The enacted budget for the coming year was conservatively constructed. Anticipating strong commitment to enhanced course enrollments, increasing membership, helpful advertising results and an aggressive development approach, Midcoast Senior College has the potential for a very positive 2023/24 year.

Respectfully Submitted
Ervin D. Snyder, Treasurer

* As of the date when this report is due the close of April figures are the most recent ones available.
