Baseball Essentials

In this course we will locate and discuss the distinctive characteristics of baseball by reading and discussing essays, stories, poems, and viewing documentary and dramatic films about the game.

Required Reading: Selections from Baseball: A Literary Anthology, edited by Nicholas Dawidoff, ISBN 978-1931082099; Donn Rogosin and Monte Irvin, Invisible Men: Life in Baseball’s Negro Leagues, ISBN 978-149622339; and Gabriel Fried, Heart of the Order: Baseball Poems, ISBN 978-0892554355. We will also view and discuss the film, “Bang the Drum Slowly.”
