Maine’s economy is in the midst of a dramatic transformation. This transformation includes new businesses in areas such as biotechnology, aquaculture, renewable energy, food processing, brewing and distilling. These economic developments are reshaping the nature of work, our institutions and the communities in which we live. The series begins with a presentation by John Dorrer, former Acting Commissioner of the Maine Department of Labor, who will provide an overview of the Maine Transforming Economy as part of MSC’s Winter Wisdom lecture series.

The Maine economy of our future includes biotechnology, aquaculture, renewable energy, revival
of agriculture and food processing, brewing and distilling. John Dorrer has served in government
as Acting Commissioner, Chief Economist and Research Director of the Maine Department of Labor, the National Center on Education and the Economy, and the Training and Development Corporation. He has been an Adjunct Faculty member in the Departments of Economics and Public Administration at the University of Maine.
