Choir Director Job Description
The Midcoast Senior College (MSC) Singers is a SATB [Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass] vocal ensemble vocal ensemble composed of men and women aged 50 years and older. The unique mission of the Singer’s class is to study and perform music primarily from America, Canada, and the British Isles while improving the elder voice through vocal exercises and examining the history and stories behind the choral works that are practiced and performed. The Singers are an important part of the mission of Midcoast Senior College which is to provide intellectually stimulating learning opportunities for persons 50 years of age and older. The Singers rehearse a limited number of pieces once a week in seven week terms during both the Spring and the Fall. They present a short concert to the Senior College community at the conclusion of each semester.
Our Choir Director instructs and conducts the Singers, overseeing rehearsals, performances, and the overall musical direction of the group. They hold auditions if necessary; choose the music; engage in weekly instruction regarding the history of each choral piece; promote healthy singing habits through vocal exercises catering to the older voice; works with an accompanist and with other musicians as appropriate to create cohesive and polished performances.
Recent Course Description [Spring 2025]:
This spring, the MSC Singers will have the joy of studying, practicing, and perfecting four well-known, four-part folk choral arrangements that speak to the theme of CELEBRATION. Through song we will celebrate Midcoast Senior College’s 25th anniversary as well as the MSC Singers’ 10th Anniversary. Songs such as, “If I Had a Hammer” are part of the repertoire. As part of our weekly instruction, we will also study healthy singing habits through vocal exercises catering to the older voice in addition to the history of each choral piece.
Prerequisites: previous choral singing experience, a good musical ear, and a good memory for melody and words. Reading music is an asset but not a requirement.
Sheet music and choral folder will be provided.
Responsibilities of the Choir Director:
- Select music for the term.
- Plan and lead each weekly meeting rehearsals effectively.
- Provide instruction on musical elements and the background of works selected.
- Foster both musical understanding and the Singers’ musical growth in the development of improved vocal technique.
- Be a mentor, inspiring and motivating our Singers to reach greater increase their vocal potential.
- Build a sense of community within the MSC Singers by creating a supportive atmosphere that encourages participation and enthusiasm among the members.
Requirements:
- A background in choral conducting and vocal education.
- An ability to create an enjoyable and motivating environment, and the patience, clarity, and an ease of communication necessary to teach well.
- A passion for music and teaching music to others, especially older singers.
- An effective style of instructional delivery as well as excellent communication skills.
