Ovid’s Metamorphoses
Description
This course is a chance to brush up on all the marvelous Greek and Roman myths and legends, from the creation of the world to the reign of Julius Caesar, narrated in charming verses by a poet exiled for previous scandalous tales of love. As supplements to discussion, we’ll look at some of the fine paintings, sculptures, and prints inspired over the centuries by Ovid’s poems.
Readings
Required Reading: Ovid, Metamorphoses, The New Annotated Edition, (Rolfe Humphries, translator), ISBN 978-0253033598. Any other edition may be used.
About the Instructor
George Young has degrees from Duke and Yale and has taught Russian and Comparative Literature at Grinnell, Dartmouth, UNE, and more recently at OLLI and MSC. For twenty five years, between academic appointments, he and his wife, Patricia, ran a fine arts and auction business specializing in antique American and European paintings.
