Immigration and Opportunity: Music Inspired by Elsewhere

This piano recital and lecture will highlight music written by composers whose immigration experience and interest in musical cultures other than their own significantly impacted their works. Recent performances of the dynamic piano duo George Lopez & Guli Mahamuti include concerts in Europe, Mexico, and throughout the U.S. They gave their New York City recital debut at the Steinway & Sons flagship gallery recital hall in Times Square and gave premiere performances of newly commissioned works by living composers. January 17 at 1 p.m.: The History and Future of Maine Land Conservation—Tim Glidden

This lecture will explore the future challenges Maine faces from climate change and potential climate-driven immigration as it impacts the future of land conservation. Tim Glidden has had a long career in many aspects of Maine conservation and recently retired as President of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. He has degrees in Environmental Studies from Colby College and Forestry Science from Yale University. At CML, Brunswick.

Between 1944 and 1946, more than 4,000 German prisoners of war called Maine home. This presentation will tell the story of how the POWs arrived and the lasting impact they had on the people of Maine. David Greenham is a writer and arts consultant as well as lecturer of Drama & Theater at University of Maine at Augusta. He is a former director of Maine Arts Commission and has created touring programs for Maine Humanities Council. At CML, Brunswick.

January 31 at 1 p.m.: A Scientist and an Artist Met in the Woods—Barbara Snapp

A lifelong scientist who has found harmony with art since retiring, Barbara will tell her personal story of how her exploration in science became enriched by art. Barbara Snapp has taught and researched in science for 45 years focusing on ecological adaptiveness of animal behavior and has taught courses at Midcoast Senior College. At CML, Brunswick.

February 7 at 1 p.m.: Maine Civil War History—Heather Moran

The impact of the Civil War on Maine will be discussed using the collections of the Maine State Archives, the most comprehensive collection of Civil War documents of any state. The topic will be viewed at the local level with accounts of Mainers who contributed to or participated in the war effort. Heather Moran is Head of Archives Services at Maine State Archives and was formerly president of the Assoc. of Maine Archives & Museums. February 14 at 1 p.m.: Preserving the Dark Skies of Maine—Rob Burgess

This talk will explain the “dark sky” movement and efforts around the world to address light pollution and, importantly, what we can do in our homes and communities to mitigate it. Rob Burgess is a founding member and current president of Southern Maine Astronomers and serves as Vice-Chair of the Brunswick Planning Board. He is a graduate of Colby College and the University of Maine School of Law. At CML, Brunswick.

February 21: Longfellow Days – Samuel Longfellow and a New Vision of the Spirit

Henry’s younger brother Samuel was a unitarian minister and hymn writer. During his time in the ministry, he was responsible for some radical changes in Unitarian churches and in hymn writing. What had been to this point a purely Christian-Biblical orientation shifted to encompass spirituality inspired by earth, sea and sky. Our speaker, The Rev. Mark W. Harris, is the minister emeritus of First Parish in Watertown, MA and the author of several books, including Elite: Uncovering Classism in Unitarian Universalist History.
